I am a strong believer in "how you start is how you finish" and yet equal to that I also think "it doesn't matter where you start, it is where you finish that matters". The early days when you start somewhere new help to either confirm or deny your question to yourself of "have I made the right move?"

As you rightly mention, you can't go through the effort of searching and getting that hire, only to blow it when the person lands in your building.

@Thabo: Thank you for your insightful comment. I distinctly remember the sinking feeling I had in my stomach when things when badly on my first day at a new job. I recall that my main thought was that I had made a terrible mistake.
