"Premature escalation" sounds to me like the adult version of "tattling." Adult "tattletales" engage in this behavior for the same reasons they did in 4th grade: to gain power and a sense of satisfaction when they see someone they don't like get in trouble.

There's a downside: Tattletales are not well-liked no matter how old they are, and tattling shows that you couldn't handle the situation yourself.

There are times to escalate, but it should be a last resort.

In some corporations, being in a clique [sic?] as the same similar pitfalls when one of the members is not privy to... or even the associated with the "one of us" mentality of The herd mentality of hanging with the gang.

@Heather: Office cliques are so bothersome, aren't they?

@BW: The concept of tattling just came up the other day in my world, and you're right, it is never perceived well.
