This is interesting.. I remember reading about this story a while back and thinking it was great/exciting news. But I didn't think about how mid-level management would take it. You're right, if I'm a Manager earning $85K and suddenly the newest of employees is bumped up at $75K I'm a little upset. Although I might just go ask for a raise myself in that case and justify it with some proof of my performance and improvement.
