Sometimes, demotions are a good thing. And they don't have to be involuntary. When my boss noticed I was having a difficult time, and suggested a move one level down, I jumped at the chance.

I was clearly in over my head, and really was not interested in my current position. I got to move back down to level wher eI could better contribute. My stress level sunk to an all time low. And I stopped dreading going to work (although I'd still rather stay home if not for those pesky bills).
