I definitely agree with Take Responsibility, being likeable, Addressing the issue head-on.

We start learning this in school or at home the benefits of being likeable.
Take Responsibility is important but rare, because the possible blame aspect is too strong avoid. There is always a possibility of being the scape goat & end up getting fired.

How can the employer get people to take responsbility?
'Hard to be replaced' concept has a big negative because one obvious way to make him/herself irreplaceable by being the only one that can do the needed task(s).

I have seen delay to responding to customers, delay to projects for days/weeks, slowing down businesses due to this.

For employees that cares about keeping their job and not the big picture, this might be the right thing to do.

How can an employer prevent such an mentality?

@Ian: I feel that managers play a direct role in encouraging reports to understand and take responsibility for their actions (or inactions as the case may be). Regular, specific communication along these lines is imperative, because in many cases, the employee may not even realize she has such a passive mentality.

I've seen so many people that are sescucsful in their chosen field. I have a friend that started an online business just for part time income but as time passes his income on his business are earning more than his job so he decided to quit his job and focus on his online business full time.Julie Hayes recently posted..
